Alabama Agricultural and MechanicalUniversity is a land-grant University. Itssupport comes from the State of Alabama andfederal funds appropriated to assist in carryingon work stipulated by the Morrill Acts of 1862and 1890. The University is under the controlof a board of trustees appointed by theGovernor, who serves as ex officio Chairman. The 131-year-old university was organizedin 1875 as the result of a bill passed in the StateLegislature in 1873 and through the continuedefforts of its first principal and president, WilliamHooper Councill, an ex-slave. The schoolopened on May 1, 1875, as the HuntsvilleNormal School with an appropriation of $1,000per year, 61 students, and two teachers.
